薄小波的艺术

在中国的文人传统中，绘画和书法等都能成为一种观察自己心灵的方式。对受过一定观赏训练的人，那些艺术，比人的外表言谈，更直透出心灵的精微之处。另一方面，对于已暴露在艺术中的内心的反思，使得人心，可以通过不断的艺术实践来磨练和修正。传统上，这种修正的方向，大致上是避物欲，趋精神的。中国艺术中的境界由此而生。薄小波的美学，是建立在对终极精神价值的求问上。即他所谓的“根本”。在艺术时尚化，西方文化在中国全面走向胜利的今天，他能挥开都市的喧嚣斑斓，不做浮皮潦草的反映，不提供模棱两可或狐假虎威的质疑，而是不断企图用艺术，来端正当下人心的位置。我在这里看到一个传统中国文化人的境界。在他的艺术实践中，有非常独立的文化人格，即所谓立场的东西。他在这个物欲横流，精神遭贬低的时代里，认真，不虚无。

The Art of Mr. Bo Xiaobo
According to the tradition of Chinese literators, painting and calligraphy, etc. can be a form of looking into one’s own heart. To those who have been trained on how to appreciate art, those arts rather than a man’s appearance and words can more directly reflect the subtleness of the heart. On the other hand, the thoughts about the soul expressed in art make people chasten and correct their hearts through the continuous practice of art. Traditionally, this kind of correctness is toward immaterialism instead of materialism, which brings about the “realm” in Chinese art. Mr. Bo Xiaobo’s aesthetics is based on his seek for the ultimate spiritual values, and he calls it “root”. When art becomes a kind of fashion and the western culture is gaining more and more popularity in China, he can neglect the clamor and dazzle in the urban, and he neither reacts exaggeratedly nor offers ambiguous queries. Instead, he has tried to correct the people’s souls by means of art. I can see the “realm” of a traditional Chinese literator. In his practice of art, there is a very strong and absolute personality of culture, which can also be called “standpoint”. In an age of materialism and when spirit is depreciated, Mr. Bo Xiaobo is earnest and genuine.

学习画画

20年来，一直在看，在想，在学。
搞艺术的老友们，有坚持的，有转行的；有变化不大的，有一直在变的；出国的出国，回国的回国；有功成名就的，也有退隐江湖的…… 悄悄地，我也画起了画。除了看，除了想，除了写字、说话，我开始想要找到我知道的艺术本来的面貌。
我有关心我的恩师，有有才华的艺术家们做朋友，有从小到大未变的对艺术的兴趣，也有稳定的工作收入支持。20年来，这些在慢慢地磨合、锻炼，让我学会做一个艺术家。
世界在变，中国在变，艺术形态在变，人也在变。万变中也有不变。我试图在这些变化中，通过学习，通过努力，画我想画的。

Learning to paint
I’ve been seeing, thinking and learning for the recent 20 years.
Of all my old friends engaged in art, some have insisted on their art, and others have switched to other jobs; some have undergone great changes, but others have not; some have gone abroad while others have returned; some have become very famous, yet others have quit… Stealthily, I have taken up painting. Besides reading, thinking, writing and speaking, I began to find out the original image of the art that I knew.
I have my dear teacher who supports me; I have friends who are talented artists; I have interest in art that hasn’t been changing since my childhood; and I also have steady income. In these 20 years, all the above things have mixed together and trained me to be an artist.
The world is changing; China is changing; the forms of art are changing; and the human beings are also changing. However, there is something not changing. Within these changes, I have tried to paint what I want through learning and effort.
