called the local Circuit City to see if they had the new DX6490 in yet. They did. So last night I went down to the store to play with it. The salesman was great (as they always are at CC) and lent me a small SD card while I played.
I snapped a bunch of pictures and have some observations to share … but first the funny part of the story. He let me carry the SD card to the back of the store and plug it into a computer to get a better view of the pictures. I fell in love with the camera. I could not believe the quality of the pictures. Between my last three cameras I have saved over 5000 pictures (no idea how many taken). None of them compared to what I was looking at here. Most of these pics were just set on Auto, flash on (indoors) and zoom not very far out.
So I asked the sales man if I could possibly print one of the pictures on a display printer. He said sure. We picked the little HP that does the 5x7 prints. The picture I chose to print was one of an XBOX display. It was a poster of a red car held by a silver display case. When the thing came out, the guy could not believe it. He called over to other salesmen to look. Customers started to look. My picture got passed from person to person (maybe 15 by then). Both the cameras they had in stock were sold on the spot. I never got one (they expect more next week). The picture was unbelievable. Everyone was going over to the Xbox display and comparing it to the picture.
When I got the picture home, my wife could not believe the picture was not a professional brochure pic. When I finally convinced her, she simply said “go buy the camera”. And she is a real cheapskate.
Observations:
1) Focus all the way out, in the store, on Auto … the camera did a poor job. This is due to the lack of image stabilization technology. This is the same problem I have with my Oly C-730. Not sure why you would use full Zoom indoors anyway. Solution I do on my Oly is simple: Outdoors set it to sports to get the shutter and film speed up. This compensates nicely.
2) The black out of the view finder is a nuisance. However, if you immediately push the shutter button it will give you the view finder back. This is good for about 3 shots before it has to complete the write to the card. The return to action time on the DX6490 is better than my Oly C730 (not a whole lot, but definitely better.)
3) The camera has 16mb of memory built in. If you use the SD memory, it does not fail over to the onboard 16MB when the SD is full. Not a big deal.
4) The Macro is unbelievable. I got less than an inch away form things and it took perfect pictures.
5) The camera can fall behind on shots as it attempts to write to memory. I believe this is because of the SD memory. My Oly uses XD, I believe (not totally sure but remember reading it 6+ months ago) that the XD write time is the fastest of all the cards.
6) The LCD on the back is outstanding. Switching between the LCD and the view finder is simple but Kodak could have done a better job. For example, have the review always default to the LCD instead of the current shooting mode. Not a big deal.
Summary: Last night’s trip will cost me $650 (Camera @500, 256mb card @100, Extra Battery, Camera bag ….). I am in love and I have to get this thing.

老外说"对焦很慢.是因为在图象稳定技术的限制"??这个老外瞎扯啊??这两个有关系么?不过他也有730.哈哈哈.在户外用运动模式,有高快门速,嘿嘿.没有铁手吧.
省电模式太快了,动不动就黑了.....恢复比730快.
内建16MB,没什么意思.
很吓人的微距.....花180圆买个海鸥的标头,爽死你!!!
XD卡是最快的..比SD卡快.
LCD做的很好,出众.....

閃燈好！

It looks better than olympus 740 and 750
缺點: 冇Hot Shoes，附上的外接閃燈位不好用
